HOW DOES IT WORK?
First step
The first step is to contact me to arrange a free 20-minute online or telephone consultation. This gives us both an opportunity to ask questions and decide whether working together feels like a good fit.
If we decide to proceed, we’ll arrange your first 50-minute session.

How many sessions will I need?
There’s no fixed answer. Some people attend for a small number of sessions; others work longer term. We’ll review this together along the way, and you remain in control of when to pause or end therapy.

Online sessions
Online sessions are fundamentally the same as face-to-face (in person) sessions, we're just not in the same room. Some people prefer face-to-face sessions, others prefer online. In my experience, the therapeutic alliance builds in a similar way in either case and online sessions can be just as impactful and useful as face-to-face sessions. It's really only a matter of preference and convenience.
I use a secure, encrypted platform called Doxy.com and will provide a link for our sessions. It will be the same link every week. You'll click on the link and wait for me to join you to begin the session. We would both need to take responsibility for confidentiality with this format, ensuring that we are able to have a private conversation. It would not be appropriate to engage in online sessions while travelling on a train, or from a coffee shop for example.
There is no need for you to register with the platform and there is no charge to you for accessing the platform. If you would like to discuss arranging online sessions with me then please do get in touch and we’ll start a conversation about it.

'Walk and Talk' sessions
‘Walk and Talk’ therapy is basically how it sounds, we walk, and we talk. We are side by side as we walk. Silences, or quiet pauses can feel much more comfortable while we walk together.
These sessions will be risk assessed for health & safety. We will agree in advance how to proceed if the weather is inclement, the route we will take during the session, and how confidentiality is managed when or if we pass others on our route.
I currently offer ‘Walk and Talk’ for clients local to me in Tonbridge, Kent. I am located very close to a lovely green environment and we have a choice of paths to take.
There are advantages to this kind of therapy- green environments are recognised to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. Walking itself is a good exercise to undertake. Additionally, therapy outdoors can be helpful for those who feel stuck in the therapeutic process, or for those who may have had poor therapeutic experiences in the past, or struggle with the eye contact required/encouraged by face to face therapy.

Telephone sessions
Telephone sessions are similar to online sessions, just without the video. This does increase the sense of separation between client and therapist but that may be preferable for some people who just literally want to talk. The therapeutic alliance is still crucial to the efficacy of the therapy and builds in a similar way to the other formats, but perhaps more slowly.
We would both need to take responsibility for confidentiality with this format, ensuring that we are able to have a private conversation. It would not be appropriate to engage in telephone sessions while travelling on a train, or in a coffee shop, for example. This format might be useful for those who want to get to know their therapist and build trust before moving to online therapy or an in-person format.

E-mail sessions
Email counselling is usually structured as one email exchange per week. You write a message (or messages) containing your thoughts, feelings, issues and concerns. I will then spend around 50 minutes reading and considering your email and composing a suitable response, perhaps offering a new perspective or helping you to see a situation/experience in a different way.
This format might be suitable for those who struggle to articulate their thoughts spontaneously and prefer to have time to think about what they want to say.
If you like the sound of this type of arrangement but have a different idea about how it might work then please do get in touch as I may be able to accommodate your needs.
